TV & The Olympics

I don't watch much television and I totally dislike the fact that we have to pay for it now. 

 This photo was made Friday, a TV antenna, something you don't see here anymore. All tv reception is cable or satellite for us Long Islanders. This antenna is probably just a left-over. 

We just had satellite installed, Direct TV. We haven't canceled Cablevision yet until we are sure we're happy, especially at the price we have to pay for TV. We're not too happy right now. While watching yesterday's Olympics, the men's cycling event, at the finnish, we lost TV. This is the second time in ten days or so that we've have serious weather and lost TV, yesterday for long time. Oh well.

I love watching the Olympics. Today's woman's cycling event brought tears to my eyes as Elizabeth Amitstead earned Great Britain's first metal, a well deserved silver.  Men's volleyball is on now, the games are incredible!

Crazy at work

I came across this door on my way to a job last week. I thought about the saying,"one door closes and another opens." This was the side door for a florist that went out of business.  

I hope another door opened for them.

It's summer and it's my busy season, crazy busy. Busy is good. I was suppose to work tonight, but there's a storm watch, so the concert on the lawn was canceled.

ArtHampton

One of the benefits fo living on the east end of Long Island is the art scene. Southampton and points east of here are known for being artsy, William Merritt Chase painted in the neighborhood where I now live, Jackson Pollock lived and worked in East Hampton the list goes on. It has to be the good light!
Each summer for the past five years promoters rent what seems to  be the world largest tent and host ArtHampton.
Last year was the first year I attended, and it was awesome! I was so motivated by the different things I saw and some of the people I met. This year I went again, but found it less motivating. Maybe even a little disappointing. First, there was a lot of the same work I remember from last year. Some new art, but much of the same. On that note, it also seemed every dealer/gallery had a piece featuring Marilyn Monroe. I know she's an iconic figure but enough is enough! 

I photographed this because my wife always asked me to photograph our greyhound, Isabel, with a hat on her little head. Wouldn't know that someone painted a greyhound just like that! Oh well!

A walk on the shore

Guided by Town of Babylon's Department of Environmental Conservation, I went on a walk with the town's intern program to see what the DEC does on a local level. It was very educational to say the least. Our guides walked us along a restricted area where we were able to see a Least Tern nest with an egg.

The Least Turn is a protected species. The DEC monitor where they nest and fence it off till the chicks are on their own. 

Both this chick and egg were on the unprotected side of the fence.  We saw an egg that was stepped on, and a bunch of eggs that were gathered and placed on the protected side of the fence by someone who cared enough to move them but was unaware that once touched they would never be hatched.  

dragonflies

I was at a town park this evening

 and the place was swarming with  dragonflies.

 One landed on my hand as I held my camera. I didn't see of feel any mosquitoes. 

Airport

There's a few small airports here on the east end of Long Island. The further east you go, the more likely you'll find a crop duster or two on a farm. This airport's big draw is skydiving. It's close to the south shore, but I'd bet you could see both shores from up in the sky.

I've never seen so much pink on a Queen Ann's Lace.

Bronze fennel

This is my last photo from Sophia's Garden. Bronze fennel, a beautiful smokey looking herb plant, both red and green. 
I was told it is very invasive and if I were to plant it, to put it in raises boxes away from the garden. 
It is very hot here today, please be careful in the heat.

Sharecropper

A modern-day sharecropper picking turnips. This was made at the organic farm, Sophia's Garden, on the grounds of the Dominican Sisters Retirement Grounds in Amityville. You don't have to be a nun or retired to become a member. Some people participate in the fields, planting, weeding and harvesting, others pay for produce. It's an awesome place. 
The out-of-focus green and tan plants are garlic, soon to be harvested. 
(This is the same Amityville of Amityville Horror fame.)

Row of Maple Trees

Way past these rows, on the other side of the weeds, you'll find a fence and a road. That's the usual view I have of these beautiful trees. While visiting an organic garden last week I found myself on the other side of the fence so to speak.  This is part of the grounds for the Dominican Sisters Retirement Home in Amityville.
