Legs

I've always been a leg man!
A Larry Rivers sculpture called legs, that lives in the historic village of Sag Harbor has caused a big stir. Neighbors don't like it or the traffic or the lights that up-lite it at night.  The owners of this sculpture, Janet Lehr and Ruth Vered are well known in the art word and here on the east end of Long Island. The Vered Art Gallery in East Hampton is quite the place! I would highly recommend it.
But, sometimes artists and gallery owners look for attention. A few years back, The Vered Gallery was in the press because they were serving wine during an opening. They don't have a liquor licence.  The great news is that it caused such a stir, the gallery was packed with visitors. The press about the legs has caused the same thing. They put the sculpture up in 2008, but it wasn't until recently that they were asked to remove them.
After a major newspaper article about them, someone asked me to make a photograph of them and actually I couldn't find them. I was looking for them on the front and not the side yard.
So, now I've been to Sag Harbor twice to see and photograph the legs. Both times, I ate in the village. Maybe the chamber of commerce should try and work something out and put them in a public space for people to see. Or maybe, just keep all the hoop-la in in papers and visitors will have to stumble on them and maybe, stay for lunch. But, like any nice pair of long legs...people are gonna look! Maybe a downtown revitalization project should look into their own set to help boost traffic.

Oh wow, this is amazing! I'd love to see this in person. I find art so meaningful and especially those artists that share their work with the rest of us, fantastic! I went to Caponi Art Park (in Eagan, Mn) yesterday, and they have an amazing place there that they share for free with the rest of the world. Nothing as shocking as "the legs" and it's also all within their grounds...but gee what an experience. Thanks for sharing this! Truly a fine piece of art captured well!

Oh, I think they are fabulous! What do they say....sometimes it's better to have bad press than no press at all!
