Doors

 

I just loved the weathered look to these old doors. They belong to the old signal building in Babylon Village. The building is in private hands right now, but the town wants to purchase and restore it. They want to put it on the Historic Registry.

Doors are another feature in our lives that we personalize to give a sense of our character. Maybe that’s the reason so many photographers are drawn to photograph them.

Main Street, Babylon

Today's photograph is of an old street sign along Main Street in Babylon Village. The letters are all worn off. As I go close, I noticed in the background this street sign separated the newer school building and the older white shingled building.

A Pair of Oak Leaves

On my walk in the woods the other day I noticed some green leaves belonging to a vine. They were withered, but still green. I made a few photos from different angles but was not happy with any of them.

I prefer these Oak leaves that caught some of the falling snow.

I used the Canon G10 in macro mode for these photos. It's one of my favorite things about this little camera, the macro setting. Bother were processed with ACR.

Nine

Today was a long day. We volunteer as a family to cook breakfast for a homeless shelter here on the east end of Long Island. Maureen's Haven is a non-denomination not-for-profit that arranges dinner, a warm place to sleep and breakfast to the homeless. They work through local churches that host the program. Our church doesn't host but supplies volunteers to St. Mary's who can do double duty so to speak because of this arrangement. We'd like to host the program at our own church, but we have storage issues and have no place to store the bed rolls, pillows and air mattresses.
Last year we did a breakfast in January and another in March. This year will be the same. This morning we saw the largest group in our five years as volunteers. I'm sure it's a combination of the very cold weather and the bad economy. This was the first time I saw a bit of rudeness towards one of the volunteers. Enough of the guests thanked us to make up for it.
Today's photo could have been a snow photo, but I decided I would add to my numbers series. This nine was on the front grill of a old brush truck parked at the Middle Island Fire Department. I was there for an Boy Scout Eagle Scout and the old truck caught my eye.

Shells

So, I was offered a full-time job as a photographer yesterday that caught me by surprise.  There’s a lot to think about, I’m still a bit dumbfounded. One the one hand, I’m 52 and could use the security that comes with vested benefits, this is especially important being diabetic. On the other hand, I’ve worked very hard to get to this point to get the stable of clients I have. Working full time would mean giving up the majority or all of them.

This morning I spent some time photographing these shells my wife keeps in a basket. I placed them on the floor in the sunlight and made a few exposures with the macro mode of the Canon G10. This is the one I liked the best. 

New Years Day 01.01.10

We had a light snow yesterday morning. It's a good thing it was light, because it was wet and it would have been difficult to shovel. Along with the snow, there was no breeze, so the snow just stayed on the branches or whatever else it landed on.

 

Pine Cone

I took a short walk today at one of my usual trails. I didn't come across anything of interest but a couple of pine cones on some Black Pine Trees. This is the first one I made a photo of. The way the sun filtered into the wooded area and lit the cone made it stand out against the out-of-focus background. I thought the detail was unreal.

Green Wall

It’s funny how something I see a few times a month can all of a sudden look different. I park against, along or across from this wall whenever I visit the dry cleaner. This one morning I must have been there at the right time to catch the light.

The one spatter of yellow on the green wall just added to the whole thing.

Cattail

After dropping my son, Adam off in Northfield Vermont, I stopped to fill the car and get a much-needed coffee. I noticed a few cattails and decided to make a few photographs before leaving.

This was made with the Canon 5d Mark II and processed with Canon’s Digital Photo Professional and Photomatix Tone Mapping program.

 

Windows in Babylon

Last night I had some time to kill as I waited for my oldest son’s train to arrive. So I walked around the village of Babylon for the hour. There’s not much happening at ten o’clock except for the taverns.

This barber poll lit up the sidewalk and most of the interior of the small shop. All the stores had this magical feel to them. Possibly the cold air or the anticipated excitement of everyone being home for Thanksgiving, but everything had a magical feel to it.

It’s such a simple thing to be thankful for, I’m thankful we’re all home and we’re all safe.
