Beck at the Beach

As I was walking along the beach Friday I came across Glenn Beck's Christmas Sweater book in the sand.  Looks like it's been there awhile. There was no money between the pages so I took it to a neer-by trash receptacle and disposed of it. That red cover did stand out against the sand.

The Shack

An inferred photo of an old roadside farm stand.
Actually, I think it was a duck farm way back when. The building is a bit too backlit, but I do love the dark sky and the white foliage.

Did you off the blogisphere?

I've been busy with the vegetable garden, radishes and Hakurei Turnips are plentiful and we also harvested some lettuce.

A dog's life

Sleeping to the serenade of
scissors sniping and the occasional buzz
of the electric trimmer is an old Golden Retriever.
Welcome.
Welcome to a different, slow paced time.
One step up and a plate glass window separate
cell phones and the hustle from a Norman Rockwell view.
It's not always about the hair cut.
Sometimes it just the trip down memory lane.

No dogs

Will ya look at the face on that cat!
I took a walk around the village and this "watch cat" is a resident of the thrift store. She let me in,
but gave me a dirty look.
She must know I favor my dog.

Southampton Artists Association Show

The Southampton Artists Association annual Memorial Day show opening reception was yesterday. I'm a new member, joining this past January. All members in good standing were allowed to hang three pieces. I have an old hand printed black and white, Quality Time, Southampton Potato Barn, and The Porch as my entries. Jim Wightman's The Publicist, is the piece in-between.
Towards the end of the evening I notice a young critic making points about The Porch to her audience. I need to read the fine print to see if she's entitled  to a commission if she sells it!
The show runs till Sunday June 3rd. Hours are Sundays till Thursday 12 noon till 4, Fridays and Saturdays 12 noon till 6.
It's located at the

Southampton Cultural Center

The Shoemaker's child

While up on the north fork of Long Island I came across this old wagon for a nursery business. The hosta's were almost all overtaken with weeds, and it reminded me of the saying that the shoemaker's children alway need shoes. Love the wagon!

Have a seat, any seat!

Looks like an old movie, but it's the auditorium of a middle school here on Long Island. I was waiting around for a Girl Scout Award night to start and was in total awe of the age of this school.

A walk in the rainy woods.

Young oak leaves are so colorful.
After a day of rain, the woods are quiet
except for a drip every now and then.
The paths are muddy and full of puddles.
 It is very relaxing.

A Hidden Pond

A toned inferred photograph. This pond is across the street from the municipal buildings where I sometimes work. Except for the winter and early spring it is hidden from the fast paced life that takes place only yards away.
We went to see The Hunger Games monday night. I wanted to finish the book before I saw the movie. Both were excellent. The only thing I think the movie ruined is how Catniss Everdeen got her Mockingjay pin. It was more meaningful in the book and gave definition to another layer of class within her district. Still, I'd recommend both.

In the garden

I was one of those people that purchased this plant, as a pack of seeds, when we first moved here. The yard was bare, the soil very sandy and little would grow... Except this of course! I have them popping up all over the place. They do look pretty.

A little trip

I flew up to Burlington Vermont where Adam meet me and we drove home. Traveling in the rain is no fun, but we did fine. I left on the 5:30AM train, caught a tram to JFK to meet a jetBlue 9:20 flight to Burlington. While waiting to board, I saw the sox's on the tail of a different flight. Come on guys, this is New York!
Well, Adam is home for the summer. He's waiting to hear about an internship or go back to the ice cream store.

Butterfly or moth

Yesterday must of been the day of the moth or butterfly, whatever this is. I googled brown and orange moth and butterfly and found something similar in both searches. Oh well, so much for finding out what this is. This one was on the Boxwood plant sunning. There were an abundant amount of them flying around the yard "playing tag."
Fine Art America is holding a contest for its photographers. Five winning photographs will be used in a national television advertisement. I need 250 votes, I have 31. I was hoping
if you have a minute and a facebook account and would like to vote for  my image of lightening here's the link

Heart Shadow

We have a heart wreath
 hanging on our
side door.
The bright morning sun was
sending a message.

27) I am grateful  for those that have come before me. They have helped make a path for me.
I am grateful for those that have come after me. They  remind me of the importance of dreams.

Spring, and love is everywhere.

Decisions

It wasn't that long ago, I would be driving my son somewhere and be listening to him dream out loud. He loves playing sports. He wrestled, played football, and runs cross-country. But there was nothing he loves more that playing lacrosse. That changed this spring. Our team will play sixteen games this season, ten of which are over. They lost the first ten, a couple of those were shut-outs. In the next six contests, there are only two we could possibly do well in.
There's a few problems, we lost out best defensive player to a serious injury. We have a very young program where many of our players are only playing for the first time as they enter high school. Our school is very small, it you try-out for almost any sport you'll make the team. I don't believe we ever have any team cuts. Having a small school, we sometimes get put in a league with larger schools. Our football team, which also has a horrendous record, has the same players playing offense and defense. Sometimes we'll be playing a school that has a different offense and defense as well as an A and B squad. The last problem, kids get discouraged and so do coaches. We loose coaches and sometimes that a good thing and sometimes the lose of continuity is not such a good thing.
But, none of those things are my problem. My problem is my son. I feel he pain, but worse, I just don't know what to say to help lift his spirits and keep him in the game. He doesn't want to play lacrosse anymore, not now, not next year, not in college.
I'm no different from most any other parents; I want the best for my kids. I want them to work hard and to see the rewards of their hard work. I also want him to make his own decisions. I just feel he looking at the short term. Now is the time to play lacrosse. After high school, after college, there will be limited opportunities, if any, to play.
This photo is from Friday night's game. Evan is in the white jersey. He is the leading scorer on his team.

Maple

Maple

Crape Myrtle

This is my first post since Blogger "changed their look." I'm still feeling my way around.
Cel and I visited a couple of yard/estate sales Saturday. We had an hour or so between dropping our son off at school and the start of his Lacrosse game.
We not really looking for anything, but we usually find something. Chairs and old ball jars have been the lastest things. More and more yard/estate sales are being run by companies that entice the buyers and separate the seller's emotional attachment from buyers looking to get a great price. The last sale we visited was run by such a company and that's where I found these Crape Myrtle trees. We didn't know what they were, so I made a few photos to refer to later when I would try to look them up. We were amazed at the offerings in this house it was way beyond our wallets. On the way out, one of the people from the company asked us if we saw anything we liked? So I asked about the trees and he told me what they were... for free! What a bargin!

Trout Pond in Spring

Trout Pond is alive with color.
And in the garden the radish seeds have broke ground.

"In Spring, at the end of the day, you should smell like dirt."
Margaret Atwood

I am grateful for the smell of dirt.

Hair cuts

While walking along Main Street in Sag Harbor back in 2009 I came across a barber shop
that was only open three days a week.
It had a sign that stated the that the barber was unable to handle kids.
The shop is under new ownership.
Kids might even be welcome.

Spring Explosion

Dabs of colors exploding in the trees.

When I see all the young foliage,
the blooming trees
I am in awe of Our Creator.
It is so magnificent, it is sometimes overwhelming.

Potato barn

This is the old Potato Barn here in Southampton. I got the idea to make a few photos of it before they tear it down to put up a shopping center.
The folks around here have made it known they don't want another shopping center. My wife and I hoped that Trader Joe's would buy the barn. We love Trader Joe's and have to travel to get to one.
Besides, we have a few different supermarkets between the two towns.
Idea! The barn is on the corner down the road from the Tuckahoe Elementary School. Tuckahoe is the Indian word for potato. Trader Joe's can buy it and package local potato chips...Tuckahoe Chips.

I went back later to get a straight shot of this from a different angle.

comic book store

I saw this store for the first time Sunday on my way home from a job in Patchogue.
The sign says Comics and Cards.
From what I understand, it's the state of the brick and mortar comic store.
Another business that is now an
 internet business.

jonquil

The Town of Babylon
plants bulbs of all types along public roads, town owned spaces and beautifications spots.
It definitely adds to the overall appearance of the place especially after a drab winter.
This Jonquil is part of a planting outside the highway yard.

Pussy Willow Branch

The Pussy Willow's on the side of the house have opened,
adding to the cornucopia of pastel colors that come with spring.

MACK-Thematic Photographic 189 - Branded

Carmi over at Written Inc. has a new prompt, branded. His post of a Hummer grill reminded me of one of the first photos I made and was proud of back in high school. It was the front grill of a Mack Truck.  I made the photo because it reminded me of my dad. Back then, he had a large, square face. He was a stocky, strong man and the front grill of the Mack just reminded me of him, smiling. Affectionately.
As a young boy all semi's were Mack.  Oh, there were International, Freightliner and probably other trucks back then, but everything, to us were Macks. This isn't the high school photo, I made this yesterday. This doesn't look like dad, maybe it was an older model.

Lake Agawam

One more from last Tuesday's fog.
This is Lake Agawam in Southampton Village.
A couple of you asked why they post
Keep of the Dunes signs.
To the best of my knowledge it's because of erosion, but it's also because of nesting birds.

25) I am thankful for productive days.

I took a short walk yesterday between assignments.

Brentwood Water Tower

I saw this water tower while waiting for my son's lacrosse game to start this past Tuesday. The light and contrast against the gray clouds got me! I'm always amazed when I hear about, or see in movies, people climbing up to check out the view, or have a few beers. Remember Sweet Home Alabama?
I guess it was more popular years ago, but some of the few water towers still standing around here have graffiti on them. So people still climb up those very tall ladders.
My comment posting problem seems to be only happening with the Firefox browser. I guess when I upgraded to the latest and greatest...it wasn't. For the past few days I've been commenting and posting with the Google Chrome browser...except today. Chrome kept on freezing when I tried to up load the water tower photo. So, I'll post something new here on Firefox, quit, and comment on Chrome. See how easy computers have made our lives! Computers can drive you crazy.

24) I am grateful for my sense of humor, another gift from God.

They say it might get as high at 80 today, did I miss spring...

Morning Mist

The fog was so beautiful this morning, as usual. I think God created fog to isolate things.
It gives the viewer a different perspective,
 a view without the background.

22) I am thankful for the gift of my senses.

The Thicket

Greenbrier Thorns
We had nice day today, so I raked the backyard. It was nice to see green under the leaves. Hyacinth and tulips are both up.
 The Sedum plants have all
broken ground with green buds.
The Pussy Willow is covered with buds.
After the yard work, I went back to the little lake in the pine barrens, but the light was not right.
Maybe next time?
21) I am thankful for small things in nature.
